The Dunhuang manuscripts of Zhou Gong Jie Meng Shu record that dreaming of one's own death often foretells a long life or a promotion, as death in dreams represents the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. However, dreaming of the death of a spouse, child, or parent is generally inauspicious, suggesting worry, separation, or financial loss. The Menglin Xuanjie elaborates that a corpse lying in water indicates hidden troubles that will surface. Duanmeng Mishu notes that dreaming of a funeral with weeping is actually auspicious for wealth, as tears symbolize the water element and emotional release. The key is context: who dies, how, and the dreamer's feelings. Death dreams are not predictions but mirrors of inner change, anxiety, or relief.

In Chinese culture, death is not an end but a transition. Ancestor worship and the afterlife are deeply rooted. Dreaming of death was historically seen as a message from the spirit world.
