[Psychology] Dream recall follows a steep decay curve. If you write during the first minutes after waking, you capture detail that will be gone by the time you pour coffee. Start with keywords — three or four words that anchor the dream ("bridge, red dress, arguing, rain") — then expand into sentences only if time allows. Note the date and whether this was a first-time dream or one you have had before; that single distinction turns a journal into a tracking tool for recurring dreams.
[Wu Xing] In the Five Elements framework, every dominant dream image carries one of five elemental qualities, and tagging entries makes patterns visible over time. Fire dreams (anger, passion, urgency, the colour red) map to the Fire element; water dreams (fear, depth, emotion, black and blue) to Water; growth and new beginnings (green) to Wood; stability and nourishment (yellow) to Earth; and structure, boundaries, and letting go (white) to Metal. [Editorial] This is a symbolic framework for sorting dreams, not a diagnosis. One dream can carry several elements — tag the one that dominated.
[Editorial] Set aside ten minutes each week to read the entries back. Look for three things: repeated symbols, repeated colours, and repeated emotions. A symbol that appears three times in two weeks is a signal; a symbol that appears once is a scene. [Psychology] From a cognitive perspective, repetition in dreams usually tracks an ongoing concern in waking life — the dream returns because the situation has not changed. If the same place keeps appearing, or the same person, that repetition is the message. The recurring-dreams guide explains why some dreams loop and what to do about it.
[Editorial] Once a week, take the most striking entry and look up its symbols in the dream symbol dictionary or the relevant blog article — for example, teeth falling out, flying, or finding money. Then ask what the interpretation says about the week you actually lived: where did you feel trapped, what were you avoiding, what changed? [Psychology] Treat the interpretation as a starting point for reflection, not a verdict. The journal's real product is the conversation between the dream and your waking life.

[Editorial] Neither is required. A plain notebook and pen next to the bed are enough and avoid screen light at the moment of waking. Apps add search, tags, and reminders, but they ask you to open a glowing screen while the dream is still dissolving. Many long-term journalers use paper first, then transfer entries they want to keep. If you prefer a dedicated notebook, a simple dream journal notebook works well.
[Psychology] Tracking a nightmare on paper changes your relationship with it: the image becomes something you wrote rather than something that happened to you. Note the trigger, the setting, and how the dream ended. Recurring dreams often lose their grip once the pattern is acknowledged and named — see our guide to recurring dreams for the full approach. If nightmares are frequent or disturbing your sleep, talking to a healthcare professional is the right step; dream journaling is a reflective practice, not a treatment.
